QUEEN

The Queen of Katwe is a small budget Disney movie with largely unknown black actors playing in a very few theaters. The movie is drawing great reviews but few viewers. The lack of attention may be because of being set in Uganda with an all-black cast, lack of advertising or being viewed as a story about chess which it is not. I wish I could take my granddaughters to see it.

It is a biographical sports drama. And it is more than that. It is a true story of a poor, illiterate, nine-year-old black girl, very much an underdog due to being female and poor in a very poor country, who struggles to be the best she can be while improving her life and that of her loved ones. She inspires others to strive too. The movie also shows that winning is not always possible and losing is not failure. When you lose you try again and you try better. Phiona Mutesi is now considering going to Harvard University.

“The size of your dreams must always exceed your current capacity to achieve them.”

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel Peace Winner & President of Liberia.

A very good movie. When was the last time you and the audience applauded at the end of a movie? See it soon or look for it on DVD.
