In the live action Disney movie, Cinderella, towards the end of the movie Cinderella tells her wicked stepmother, “I forgive you”. The sweet and important message was followed by the commentator’s comments that the wicked stepmother and her daughters left the kingdom and were never seen again. Both comments are made while we look at the face of the beautiful (Cate Blanchett) wicked stepmother, being puzzled and depressed that her plans have gone awry. I’m sure many watchers of the movie thought, “good Cinderella got revenge, the wicked stepmother and her mean daughters got punished by banishment”.

Why did the movie maker feel the need to have the comments made following Cinderella’s “I forgive you”? The message of forgiveness was diluted and passed over as if, “Oh well, that is just Cinderella” and we know she is too good to be true. However, the message of hate, revenge and punishment that Cinderella should have had and the movie gave to the audience was pronounced.

At times in my life, like all of us, I have been in need of forgiveness and I have been in need of forgiving. The recognition and obtaining of both is important. I wish you success in being able to forgive and to obtain forgiveness.

One Response to Forgiveness

  1. Larry Leahy says:

Forgiveness is the hardest thing to do for most of us. Unfortunately by not forgiving we allow pent up anger and even hatred to grow and this hinders us as a person. however forgiving opens you up to a better life. We should always remember Christ on the cross forgave those who crucified him. Great post.
