Saints Need PR

Diana, Princess of Wales and mother of a future king of England, died August 31, 1997 in a car accident at the age of 36. She did some charity work.

Mother Teresa died September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, which in 2012 consisted of over 4,500 sisters and is active in 133 countries. They run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; children’s and family counseling programs; orphanages; and schools.

Their deaths (very close together) got a great deal of media attention. I observed that the death of Diana got a lot more media attention than did the death of Mother Theresa (a future Catholic saint) and winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

I guess a saint needs a public relations department and a princess does not.
